What to Expect on a Hunter Valley Wine Tour by Private Sprinter
Never done a Hunter Valley wine tour from Sydney before? Here's everything you need to know — from what happens on the drive up, to which wineries to hit, to what the ride home looks like after a full day of tastings.
The Drive Up: Better Than You'd Expect
The journey from Sydney to Hunter Valley takes around 2 to 2.5 hours via the M1. In the Sprinter, that time disappears fast. The cabin is comfortable, the seats are well-spaced, and with Spotify Jam running, the group energy builds before you even arrive.
We depart from your Sydney pickup location — usually early morning around 8–9am — and arrive in Pokolbin just as the cellar doors open.
Arriving at the Valley
Hunter Valley's Pokolbin region is beautiful — rolling vineyards, quiet country roads, and that unmistakable stillness of a wine region on a clear morning. Your driver knows the area and will take you directly to your first stop.
Most cellar doors open at 10am and welcome walk-ins, though some of the more popular ones appreciate a booking. We recommend calling ahead for groups of 8 or more.
What a Typical Day Looks Like
- First stop (10–11:30am): Arrive, taste whites and reds, buy a bottle or two
- Second stop (11:30am–1pm): Another winery, more tastings — variety is the point
- Lunch (1–2:30pm): Most wineries have excellent restaurants. Bimbadgen and Muse are favourites
- Afternoon tastings (2:30–4pm): One or two more stops, usually more relaxed by this point
- Departure (4:30–5pm): Load the wine purchases into the Sprinter and head home
The Ride Home
This is the part people remember most. Everyone's relaxed, there are bottles of wine from the day rattling in bags, the playlist is going, and no one has to worry about driving. It's genuinely one of the best parts of the day.
Your driver drops everyone home door-to-door — no waiting for an Uber, no group splintering across three different cars. One vehicle, one seamless trip home.
What to Bring
- Comfortable shoes (some wineries have outdoor areas and uneven paths)
- A light jacket — mornings in the valley can be cool
- Cash or card for cellar door fees (usually $10–$25 per person per winery, often redeemable on purchase)
- A cooler bag if you want to keep purchases chilled on the way home
- Sunscreen for outdoor seating areas
